Dr. W. H. Sheldon theoretically named the term in the early 1940s as endomorphic, mesomorphic and ectomorphic three somatotypes.

According to Sheldon, endomorphic bodies are always circular and delicate, mesomorphic bodies are square and muscular, and ectomorphic bodies are always slim and small.
