Magical ideation and belief in the paranormal are seen to constitute a trait-like personality; people either believe in it or do not. However, anecdotal evidence suggests that seeing an abnormal event can convert skeptics into believers. This transition is likely to be followed by changes in cognitive functioning, such as impaired event likelihood judgments. We wanted to see if being exposed to an anomalous event changes people’s explicit traditional (religious) and non-traditional (e.g., paranormal) beliefs, as well as cognitive biases that have previously been linked to non-traditional beliefs, such as repetition avoidance when producing random numbers in a mental dice task.

Following a psychology lecture, 91 students were treated to a magic display in a classroom. Prior to the demonstration, half of the students were told that the act was performed by a conjuror (magician group) or a psychic (psychic group). The instruction altered how participants explained the unusual experience. Participants in the magician group were more likely to explain the occurrence through conjuring talents than those in the psychic group, while the opposite was true for psychic abilities.

Furthermore, these explanations were favorably associated with their earlier conventional and non-traditional beliefs. Finally, we discovered that the psychic group avoided repetition more than the magician group, and this impact was consistent whether assessed before or after the magic display. We find that people’s interpretations of anomalous events and associated cognitive biases are influenced by pre-existing beliefs as well as contextual cues. Beliefs and accompanying cognitive biases are likely to be malleable long into adulthood, changing in response to actual life events.

Are You Psychic?

Psychic abilities are fundamentally defined by an intrinsic ability to process sensory input — both tangible and intangible stimuli — on an exceptionally deep emotional, physical, or spiritual level. This is, of course, a fairly broad definition. Because extrasensory abilities range so widely in intensity and applicability, it’s preferable to think of psychic abilities as a spectrum.

Consider four friends getting together for supper to illustrate this range. The first person to arrive approaches the host stand, chats with the maître d’, and is shown to a table. She discovers that she is missing a fork and that her water glass has already been filled after sitting. She takes a sip because she is thirsty. Also, you must try to play this Are You Psychic quiz.

Soon later, the second friend walks into the restaurant. As he approaches the host stand, he realizes that the maître d’ is on her phone, scrolling through Instagram. Unsure whether the maître d’ is bored or enraged, the second individual discreetly attracts the attention of the hosts with a friendly greeting. The host is cordial and inviting, and the second person feels instantly reassured. The host escorts the second person to the table, where he seats, greets his companion and begins to peruse the menu.

About the quiz

The third friend walks into the restaurant. She is bombarded with stimuli as she approaches the host stand: the restaurant’s bright decor, the servers’ quick motions, and a particularly noisy male in the rear of the room who appears to be dominating the conversation. His exuberance is arrogant and rude, and his small children appear both embarrassed and terrified. Will they accept his behavior as they grow older, or will they reject it and become soft and docile? When the maître d’ asks how she can assist, the third friend snaps back into reality. She shares her insights with her dinner companions as soon as she arrives at the table.

Finally, a fourth companion enters the diner. He is absolutely overwhelmed by the action, sounds, colors, and odors upon entering. He becomes aware of the interpersonal dynamics at each table, the complex relationships between the servers, the intense odor of a certain food that recalls him of boyhood, and a few burnt rafters on the ceiling in an instant. Was there ablaze? Suddenly, he feels an intense heaviness (something awful has happened here) and rushes towards the table of friends, evading the maître d’. He tries to forget these incidents, but they linger throughout supper.
