To begin, what exactly is a “Koreaboo” (K-Boo)? According to Urban Dictionary, a Koreaboo is “someone who is infatuated with Korean culture so much that they repudiate their own culture and call themselves Korean.” Yes, there are non-Korean people who claim to be Korean. People have even used “non-toxic” adhesive to turn their eyes into monolids*. Koreaboo, on the other hand, has become an insult.

To be honest, it used to bother me a little when people started calling me a Koreaboo. It stung because others were mocking something that made me joyful. I also realized that people were misusing the word and that their meanings were incorrect, which I knew I was not. So I kept the fact that I listened to K-Pop a secret from everyone except those who listened to it as well. If you’re going to use the term Koreaboo to describe someone, be sure you’re using it correctly. Also, you must try to play this Are You A Koreaboo Quiz.

Many individuals are unaware of the origins of the phrase Koreaboo. It is derived from the term “Weeaboo,” which is used to describe someone who entirely disregards their nationality and purports to be Japanese. Both of these phrases are problematic since they insist on reifying fictitious features of Japanese and Korean culture. Koreaboos worship Korean culture through K-Dramas, whereas Weeaboos get inspiration from anime. Admiring only specific aspects of a culture (which are often wholly fabricated) can be offensive to Korean and Japanese people.

While I initially became interested in Kpop, I came across a video of Seungri speaking in English, and in the comments area, people would say things like “Seunglish” when commenting on his English. At first, I thought saying “Seunglish” was innocuous. I just assumed it was his own method of speaking English that was the reason they paired Seungri and English together, but I was surprised later when I realized they were making fun of his bad English.

Many fans ask idols to speak English on a daily basis only to make fun of their English, and yes, saying “[insert boy group member] English is so cute” is also an insult, because even if that member is trying, their efforts are only turned around and turned into a cute joke to mock by their own fans.

When you get into Kpop, you start to prefer it over Western music because they don’t constantly talk about sex, drugs, and partying, and music has no meaning like Kpop you are a fan I meet a lot.

About the quiz

I don’t listen to much American music anymore because One Direction, Ed Sheeran, and Adele are all British, but I still adore Alessa Cara, who is Canadian, and amazing American artists like Meghan Trainor, Tori Kelly, and so many more. There are many musicians in Western music who do not sing solely about sex, drugs and parties, whether they are mainstream or not. So anyone who generalizes all Western music as just that demonstrates who they are.

If you think this way, your Koreaboo is on display and you’re not attempting to hide it. There’s nothing wrong with preferring Kpop to Western music. If you prefer Kpop, don’t be a fan who says these things about Western music, and don’t condemn anyone’s music taste since we, as Kpop fans, should understand how it feels to be judged for enjoying Kpop.

Career possibilities come to many people, but for the most part, people make their own job opportunities, which I’ve seen a lot of lately. Most Kpop fans’ dream profession is to be a teacher in Korea, and I don’t mind people wanting to be teachers, but wanting to go foreign when you probably wouldn’t want to do anything like that before you got into Kpop is pretty evident your sole reason for continuing.

If your ambition is to move to Korea for no other reason than to work as a teacher and experience Korean culture, you are most likely a Koreaboo.
