The alignment of a creature represents its general moral and personal attitudes: lawful good, neutral good, chaotic good, lawful neutral, neutral, chaotic neutral, lawful evil, neutral evil, or chaotic evil.
An alignment is a tool for shaping your character’s personality. It is not a shackle that will confine your character. It is possible to choose to be nice or evil consciously. Most people, however, recognize but do not select whether they are good or bad. Being neutral on the good-evil axis usually reflects a lack of commitment to one side or the other, but for some, it represents a positive commitment to a balanced viewpoint. While admitting that good and evil are objective states, not merely ideas, these people believe that a balance between the two is the best place for humans, or at least for them.
Animals and other creatures that are incapable of moral activity are neither good nor wicked. Even dangerous vipers and tigers that eat humans are ethically neutral because they cannot distinguish between right and bad behavior.

Those who advocate for chaotic conduct argue that only unrestricted personal freedom allows people to fully express themselves and for society to profit from the potential that its members possess.
Someone who is law and chaos neutral has typical regard for authority and feels neither compelled to follow nor compelled to revolt. She is truthful, although she is prone to lying or deceiving others.
Devotion to law or chaos may be a conscious choice, but it is more often than not a recognized personality trait. On the lawful-chaotic axis, neutrality is typically merely a midway state, a state of not feeling pulled toward one side or the other. Some of these neutrals, however, believe that neutrality as superior to law or anarchy, viewing each as an extreme with its flaws and shortcomings.
Animals and other organisms that are incapable of moral behavior are morally agnostic. Dogs and cats may be loyal and free-spirited, but they lack the moral capacity to be fully lawful or chaotic.
