The cultural boundaries that once stopped Korean singers from making it big in the West are being broken down one milestone at a time, thanks to K-expanding pop’s visibility in the United States. As a result, a new generation of K-pop acts is attempting to make their mark in history.

Editor’s Picks

With the release of their confident English debut, “Regular,” NCT 127 is the latest group to bring K-pop to the United States. The 10-piece band recently released their debut full-length album, Regular-Irregular, a slick concept album that weaves a parallel narrative between two worlds: reality (Regular) and dream (Irregular) (Irregular). NCT 127 debuted at No. 86 on the Billboard 200, making them the second-highest charting K-pop boy band in history.

So, what should you know about this bunch of Korean musicians who are currently creating waves in the international scene? Here’s a quick reference to NCT 127:

Which Nct Member are you?

NCT stands for Neo Culture Technology, which is not a random combination of three words, but rather an ambitious concept from SM Entertainment, South Korea’s largest record label. The project’s goal is to localize K-pop around the world through region-specific groups, with NCT 127 serving as the Seoul-based unit. (127 denotes Seoul’s longitude. #TheMoreYouKnow). However, another, newer group, NCT 127, who began their worldwide tour and press circuit this spring, may best demonstrate the sustainability of K-international pop’s expansion. In many ways, their recent North American tour was overshadowed by BTS; NCT 127 sold-out L.A.’s 7,100-capacity Microsoft Theater in early May, one week after BTS performed in front of an estimated 52,000 people at the Rose Bowl (yours truly attended both concerts). A few days later, NCT 127 came on The Late Late Show With James Corden, just before BTS nonchalantly copied the Beatles on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. And this is just the rivalry on the boy band front: K-pop girl group Blackpink recently completed a tour of the United States that included performances at The Forum and two weekends at Coachella.

About the quiz

Trying to establish a presence in the US market is a difficult aim for any young K-pop group, but fortunately—and not coincidentally—it is one for which NCT 127 is well prepared. The global dominance of BTS—a rather traditional K-pop group in terms of structure and vision, consisting of seven native Korean members—is a startling event. However, conquering the world is precisely the mission for which NCT 127 was designed.

In 2016, SM Entertainment—home to previous K-pop chart-toppers such as TVXQ, SNSD, and EXO—launched a new all-male group with an ambitious and perplexing premise. SM founder Lee Soo Man indicated at the press conference that the group, termed Neo Culture Technology, or NCT for short would focus on “various teams that would debut based in different countries around the world.” Unlike previous K-pop groups, NCT would feature an endless, shifting roster of members drawn from not only Korea, but also China, Japan, North America, and beyond. It was an idea that had previously been explored by Japanese pop groups, as well as smaller but unsuccessful previous attempts by SM. The large-scale, targeted multicultural strategy, on the other hand, was novel.
