My must-see series this summer was Charlotte. A simple title fools the English-speaking ear, but it hides one of the most emotionally charged programs I’ve ever seen about people with exceptional abilities.
Charlotte reunites the Angel Beats production team, including Jun Maeda, Na-Ga, and P.A. Works. If you enjoy one, you’re likely to enjoy the other, because Maeda’s distinctive style is evident in both works.
However, it makes you cry at least a few times because of its odd humor, flawed characters, and a plot that leaves no one guessing where it’s headed. It’s hard to explain why I like Charlotte so much without revealing spoilers, and that’s doubly difficult because I probably wouldn’t have watched it if I hadn’t known it was a Jun Maeda series.
