It tells the story of a Bengali family who decides to move to Kashi/Varanasi, a major city in central-north India, in order to better their lives. East Pakistan and Bangladesh were originally part of India. Satyajit Ray, who would go on to become one of India’s most notable film directors, transformed the autobiographical story into a film in 1955. (1943).
Song of the Little Road explores domestic politics, identity development, and the preservation of dignity. Indian literature considers it a masterpiece for its representation of how social and political upheavals may shape an individual’s personality. Apu, the family’s youngest son, tells the story in Bengali.
Bengali village Nischindpur is the setting for the novel’s opening. Family patriarch Harihar Roy is a Brahmin priest who struggles to provide for his family due to a lack of business abilities. “Clients” were the people who paid his family to execute religious ceremonies in the past. Despite the fact that the occupation was technically unpaid, the family nevertheless received presents such as fruits, grains, and (on occasion) rupees.
About the quiz
They share a home with a 75-year-old grandmother named Indir Thakrun, who spends most of her time lamenting the family’s former prosperity, not only its waning social standing. A major battle between Sarbajaya and Indir causes Indir to leave the house, which she does, but she dies shortly thereafter.
Ray believed that Subrata Mitra, a still photographer, could do a good job of shooting the three films. The images Mitra captures, first with a borrowed 16mm camera and then with his own 16mm film camera, are breathtaking. As the camera pans back and forth across the little, threatened space, we sense the mother’s dread and haste. Unbelievably, the film abruptly turns to the quick takeoff of birds after death.
In the early 1990s, when Subrata Mitra was honored at the Hawaii Film Festival, he acknowledged not Satyajit Ray, but—his camera, and his film. On those initial days of filming, the hope of these newbies must have been simple.
Throughout “The Apu Trilogy,” we get a sense of a distinct kind of living. While rural Bengali life was traditional and hard in the 1920s, the film takes place in the city of Kolkata. The stealing of apples from an orchard sparked a lot of commotion. While trains unite or separate the individuals throughout the film, they also provide one character with a possible suicide option.
