This 2019 franchise-starter’s creators, led by director David F. Sandberg, toned down the Troma Lite sarcasm and post-Spielberg sentimentality that have come to characterize the lighthearted James Gunn-style super-projects that predominate the landscape.
“Shazam! Fury of the Gods” veers off in that path more. The original “Shazam!”” works as well as it does because it’s primarily centered on two adolescent pipsqueaks named Billy Batson (Asher Angel) and Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer), who, with some help from their extended family of orphan friends, get sucked into a generic fantasy. “Shazam! Despite another strong comedic performance from protagonist Zachary Levi and a few scattered yuks throughout, “Fury of the Gods” largely adheres to the comic book formula that the first film mocked. Compared to the first “Shazam!,” it is schtickier and less confident.however, these remnants still reheat adequately.

Billy’s worries are the loudest for the “Marvel Family,” as comic book readers refer to them, a friendly group of adolescents who, upon shouting the magic word “Shazam,” are bestowed with superhuman abilities. However, even Philadelphians, where the majority of “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” occurs, but nobody seems to recognize the children. They call the Marvels the “Philly Fiascos,” probably because it’s impossible to effectively rebrand a DC Comics character as anything from Marvel. Billy and Freddy frequently make jokes about this final plot point, so don’t worry if you missed it.

The ensemble cast of the film, particularly the actors who portray the punchy, adult-aged demigods that Billy and his family transform into when they utter the magic word, finesses this type of pre-chewed humor to make it endearing. Adam Brody, who portrays “Super Freddy” (also known as Captain Marvel Jr., Elvis’ favorite super-hero), and Levi, who plays Billy’s alter-ego Shazam (also known as Captain Marvel), both stick out as teenagers coping with burdensome adult emotions and responsibilities. The film’s grownup antagonists aren’t particularly memorable, but Mirren still grinned like a pro.

Throughout “Shazam! “, there are hints of a cozier and more witty teenage super-drama. Fury of the Gods” contains some obviously enunciated and frantically uttered conversation that allude to Billy’s persistent worry about “aging out of” his family, particularly as he approaches the age of 18. His other family members also have lives to live, but we only get glimpses of them whenever the plot slows down long enough to focus on endearing but underdeveloped side characters, like the unicorn-lover Darla (Faithe Herman) or the secretly gay Pedro (Jovan Armand), who both effectively tug at the heartstrings in focus groups.
About the quiz
“Shazam! If the film “Fury of the Gods” had given equal attention to Billy and Freddy’s endocrine concerns, it might have worked better. In two sequences, Billy fantasizes about wooing Wonder Woman, and Freddy has a crush on Anthea, a new girl. (Rachel Zegler, who sadly has no chemistry with Grazer). Billy continues saying that his family is everything, but perhaps he should concentrate on fighting with his adopted brother and his super-ego? Why not try it again since it worked before?

Although Levi uses all the extra space he is given to create a goofy character who, like an actual adolescent, lacks a filter and an indoor voice, the majority of the major emotional moments lack cornball vigor. This helps to make up for a few flaws, particularly in a film where the major action sequences are mostly just there and the jokes need to be both sped up and given more punch. You have to want to hang out with the Philly Fiascos, and Levi’s probably the best choice for a recent superhero movie’s main character and lead performer. It’s unfortunate that this film features a number of other personalities.
Since Captain Marvel is a challenging character to portray well, what chance does Levi’s big red cheese have of surviving the most recent DC implosion if DC still can’t make a happy—or at least functionally grimdark—Superman movie?
