The film opens with Antonio Banderas’ Puss in Boots relating the story of a shooting star that crashed to Earth. According to the myth, the star contains a single desire that will be granted to the most deserving person.
Puss is reveling in his status as a living icon by hosting a party at the residence of the Governor of Del Mar and performing a song about his own greatness. Puss escapes when the Governor shows up, but only after he has successfully tricked and outwitted the Governor and his guards. Using explosives, Puss rouses the Sleeping Giant of Del Mar. After learning that this is his last chance at life, Puss goes to Mama Luna’s Cat Rescue to retire, and it seems that this is when he meets Perro. When he first encounters Puss, Perro is wearing a rudimentary cat costume. The fake puppy’s upbeat story about being a therapy dog even includes inviting Puss, the downtrodden hero, to rub his less-than-adorable stomach. Even though Puss is disturbed by his new friend, maybe an excessively cheerful expression is what Puss needs to get himself out of his existential funk.
