65 Quiz

You’d think a movie in which Adam Driver battles a bunch of dinosaurs couldn’t possibly be boring, but “65” is.

This is a film that would have benefited from being a lot dumber. The big-budget sci-fi film, which allegedly cost $91 million and was featured in a Super Bowl commercial, should have embraced its B-movie roots. Instead, it attempts to balance a wild survival story with a touching family drama, but both elements are rushed and underdeveloped to the point where neither registers. There’s nothing to these characters, and the action scenes become tediously repetitive. A jump scare, insistent notes from an overbearing score, some running and shrieking, gnashing of teeth, and possibly an injury before a close escape are all present. Over and over and over and over.

Editor’s Picks

However, the film from Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, whose accomplishments include co-writing “A Quiet Place” with John Krasinski, has an intriguingly contradictory premise. It takes place 65 million years ago, but it implies that futuristic civilizations lived on planets throughout the universe at the time. Driver appears in one of them as Mills, a space captain. He’s about to start on a two-year exploratory quest to raise funds for his sick daughter (Chloe Coleman from “My Spy,” who appears in the film’s prelude and sporadic video snippets).
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this 65 quiz.

On his journey to his destination, Mills’ ship encounters an unexpected asteroid field, is ripped to shreds, and crashes. All of the passengers in cryogenic sleep are killed, except for one, who happens to be a female around his daughter’s age. Ariana Greenblatt plays her, and her name is Koa. And the world, which has swampy terrain similar to Dagobah, is—wait for it—Earth.

Mills and Koa must schlep from the debris to a mountaintop in order to commandeer the escape pod perched there and soar away before dinosaurs stomp and chomp on them. The creatures can be startling at times, but at others they appear cheesy and fake, like animatronics from a Chuck E. Cheese eatery. Despite this, It almost would have been better—or at least more entertaining—if “65” had played with the fundamental ridiculousness of combining complex technology with the Cretaceous period. Within this prehistoric context, they rarely use Mills’ advanced gadgets in novel ways. The few attempts at humor fall flat (mostly Koa making fun of Mills for being uptight), and moments of danger wrap up too neatly for us to revel in their terror.

Worse, Driver doesn’t get to play it up nearly enough in this film. He’s an actor with a lot of intensity, which can be both exciting and amusing if he does it right. Imagine him yelling “More!!!” at Luke Skywalker in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” or punching a wall during a fight in “Marriage Story.” However, the character he portrays in “65” is blandly heroic and appears generally annoyed. Greenblatt, for her part, does her best with a figure we know nothing about. Koa speaks a language other than English, so the majority of her interactions with Mills comprise of her mimicking the basic words he says to her, such as “family.” There is no genuine bond between them, but there is no prickly tension because they are stuck with each other. “The Last of Us” is not this.

About the quiz

Beck and Woods provide some clever camerawork but also some erratic editing decisions. They also borrow heavily from the “Jurassic Park” series, such as a massive footprint in the mud or a dinosaur’s yellow eye peering menacingly through a window. But, at this juncture, it may be unavoidable. Their picture only becomes truly entertaining near the conclusion, with a climactic combination of a sneaky quicksand patch, a ravenous Tyrannosaurus rex, a well-timed geyser explosion, and a catastrophic asteroid shower. But by then, it will be too late for us—and for the earth.
