First stuff. First stuff. The death which started the program is shown by a 13-year-old Ryan Ross in a final twist. After his father John had discovered an incestuous romance with Erin (the two cousins were removed), Ryan took the old revolver of Mr. Carroll during their family reunion in Lake Harmony, in a bid to frighten him that he would stay away from his family. When Erin tries to wrest it off, Ryan pulls the trigger accidentally — twice he hit one of his fingers first, then mortally hurt her in the head.
John, the father of Ryan and the spouse of Lori, admits the murder of Erin, stating that Erin contacted him from the engagement party of Frank (the former husband Mare) upset to ask that he finance the ear surgery of their baby DJ. John says she blamed him, threatening him to shoot herself, for wrecking her life. He claims he shot her in the hand by accident while wrestling her gun, then he panics and shoots her in the face. Then, with Billy’s help, he transported her body to the woods and dropped it there, making it look like teens drinking in the vicinity.
But there’s something wrong. Analyzing the uncovered ballot in the previous episode shows that he originated in an ancient armed gun from the 1980s, the sort that Mare’s late father, carried by police. Apparently, Mr. Carroll calls Mare and visits his residence, where he tells him that things have been missing ever since the death of his wife Betty (in episode 5).

One of the things he utilized in his days at the Ridley police is his gun, a Colt detective special. As the rifle returned to its shed, Mr. Carroll discovered that two bullets were missing. (John first sought, in order to prevent prosecution, to pretend that he had Erin killed.) It was a turn we didn’t see coming, but director and managing director Craig Zobel thinks Ryan was the murderer of Brad Inglesby’s screenplays all along. “I understand that from the very, very first moment he had always had that idea,” Zobel tells TVLine, adding that the whole series “really grew out of that idea.”
Mare, however, wasn’t an easy whodunit: The ending took time to study the emotional repercussions of everyone involved even after we learned the killer’s identity. Zobel says that was conscious. “So it felt like we needed a while to talk about Mare and Easttown following the completion of the killing mystery, actually the stuff that drives the program. This was in some ways the key thing for us, and the murder mystery was certainly fulfilled.”
Brad Inglesby, the creator of Easttown, never wanted to complete his detective story from left (or to use a basketball analogy in honor of the title character: be a half-court heave).

Now that the climax of the Mare of Easttown is over, the promise seems to have been met. It undoubtedly was an astonishing yet refreshingly guessable response to “Who Killed Erin McMenamin”. Actually, we came rather close to guessing! This final hammer reveals the sharp reality that identifying the assassin isn’t really an end… just the misery to a family and a community.
Period. Blank dot. By the end of the episode, this reality is absolutely unambiguous. However, Mare of Easttown is certain to give us some final red harnesses before it reveals about 40 minutes.
In the close of the last episode, Ryan’s uncle Billy Ross (Robbie Tann) appeared to confirm that the one who was sleeping with Erin, fathering her wee-baby DJ, had later assassinated her. The final “Sacrament” doesn’t waste time revealing that it was misleading to the viewers. Erin and Billy’s brother John Ross stood together in bed on a photograph.
