One of the most prevalent features of the human experience is also one of the most appealing and consistent TV images: ennui. Typically, films or series which reveal themselves to a character who is frustrated with the redundancies of daily life soon make way for an extraordinary and visual adventure, in which the subject (and the audience) can learn to understand their own (such as “Groundhog Day”) and/or get a little more out from their comfort zone (from my head: “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”). In “Mr. Corman” Enter. Josh Corman, a thirty-something former musician, is played by Josep Gordon-Levitt, creator, managing producer, and director on several episodes, who hung up his guitar belt to be the beginner of fifth-grader. Josh has been living for over a year with his high school friend, Victor (Arturo Castro), going to work, coming home, lying on the sofa, playing video gaming and watching TV, and then heading to bed again to get the cycle going. Although Josh loves his job – he does it — and he recalls himself constantly how comfortable he is with others, Josh is not happy. His unfulfilled frustrations make him grumpy, agitated, and angry each day. “I’ve got it extremely nice,” his mother says (Debra Winger). “That’s not always the way it feels.”

“Mr. Corman” written, directed, produced, and starring Gordon-Levitt is uncomplicated. Inconsistent example of how his great creative swings sometimes snap together but suffer largely from their inconsistency. There are animated sequences and numbers of songs and dance, a sub-plot about following your aspirations, and another sub-plot concerning parental pain and, lastly, a pair of episodes regarding our changes in life during the COVID-19 pandemic. It isn’t dark or witty enough or sufficiently meaningful or irreverent. “Mr. Corman” seems to never really know what he wants to express in a generous 10 episodes.
The title is “Mr. Corman.” Josh Corman, an L.A. 30 and a Fifth-grade professor. He has been an Indian electronic band formerly fictional artist Megan (Juno Temple) in his previous life and has had difficulty continuing in the year after it broke up. He lives with Víctor, his lifelong buddy, and discovers that he wishes to revitalize his life in the opening episode “Good Luck.” Perhaps he will have to date again, or perhaps he will have to start playing again. Whatever it is, there needs to be something changing.
