More bleak midwinter on the screen might not be what a moviegoer is looking for during the real gloomy midwinter. Full disclosure: Scott Cooper’s film “The Pale Blue Eye,” which he wrote, produced, and stars Christian Bale in, is drenched in gloomy midwinterness and is set in the more rugged-than-modern Hudson Valley of New York in 1830. The blue uniforms of the cadets at West Point Military Academy, the then-emerging college where much of the action takes place, and flashes of blue water serve as visual breaks in Masanobu Takayanagi’s cinematography.
Of course, the gloominess suits the narrative. A cadet called Fry is found not only dead—by hanging, it is initially assumed—but also with his heart severed—at the Academy. The character of Augustus Landor, portrayed by Bale, is a reclusive “cottager” who recently lost his daughter who isn’t quite an adult. He enjoys drinking, sleeps with the warm-hearted tavern proprietor (Charlotte Gainsbourg), and despite his dry wit, he is prone to melancholy. He is said to have once persuaded a criminal to confess by giving him just a “piercing look.”

The Pale Blue Eye,” based on a book by Louis Bayard, is one of those mysteries with such a small cast of characters/suspects that its main plot seems like a feint, and it is.
