Joe is a scriptwriter who is struggling to pay his car and other bills. He resolves to leave Los Angeles and return to Ohio but is pursued by two repo men before he can do so. A former silent-era cinema actress who is proud, selfish, and on the verge of becoming a complete lunatic, Norma Desmond, actually owns it.
After he offers to help her edit the script she’s been working on, Norma decides to let him remain with her. Joe becomes Norma’s live-in visitor when Max, Norma’s servant, describes the world of the “grim sunset castle” to him. Before she can openly try to make him hers, Norma starts giving Joe presents and slowly falling in love with him. It’s not long before he gives in and sleeps with her, becoming her “keeper”.
Joe, on the other hand, is restless and wants to get away from the situation. Joe covertly works on a screenplay with Betty Schaeffer, a script reader and the girlfriend of one of his pals, Artie, while Norma believes Cecil B. DeMille will adapt her screenplay.
