Some 20 years earlier, she had fled sectarian bloodshed and hatred in a country similar to Lebanon to work for him. They learn that she left her children two letters. In the case of Jeanne (Melissa Desormeaux-Poulin), this father is unknown. He is instructed to give it to a brother they didn’t know they had.
Denis Villeneuve’s Oscar-nominated “Incendies” doesn’t hide the fact that this is a thriller premise. Nevertheless, it aspires to be much more than a thriller, and it succeeds in portraying how foolish and fruitless it is to hate people because of their religious beliefs. “Incendies” teaches us that an accident of birth is not a basis for hatred.
Nawal (Lubna Azabal), the twins’ mother, is the heroine who arrives at this conclusion. Jeanne travels to the Middle East in order to fulfill her mother’s desires and fulfill her mother’s dreams. It’s not until much later in the novel that Simon decides to return to Canada. As a result of Jeanne’s meetings and chats with Nawal, we learn about Nawal’s early existence in flashbacks. For both of them, this was simply not conceivable at the time and location in question. A love, religious, and political odyssey ensued, inspiring her to undertake inconceivable acts.

Somewhere in the Middle East (the exact location is not given, but the narrative and setting are extremely reminiscent of Lebanon), young Arab males are being collected up and waiting for their turn to get an excessive buzz cut. In slow dolly pans, the camera looms and presses in, adding a gloomy and unsettling tone to a straightforward physical scene. As “You and Whose Army” settles in, our attention shifts away from the unnerving opening and toward the introduction of each individual one by one, before finally leading us to a drab office to jumpstart the plot.
Notary Jean Libel (Remy Girard, “The Barbarian Invasions”) executes the will of Nawal’s former secretary, Nawal (Lubna Azabal, “Paradise Now”).
About the quiz
There are no spoilers, but the end result is so stunning that the actual surprise is the audacity of the director to do it. However, there isn’t enough understanding provided to make the story’s underlying theme completely forgivable despite the story’s broad analysis of human beings and their various facets (the mother’s status as a killer, prisoner, student, and refugee, etc.).
Villeneuve’s refusal to identify the film’s setting as a real-world country makes it difficult to follow and too imprecise. “You have scenes with a child being shot and it isn’t critical of anything?” he asks in interviews. “You have sequences with a youngster being shot and it isn’t critical of anything?” What truly holds things back is the impersonal, watery tone of the former. It’s unlikely to evoke anything more than a shrug.
Jeanne, a Ph.D. student who teaches “pure mathematics” in Montreal, travels to the Middle East in order to learn more about Simon’s mother, whom she thought she knew only dimly. A series of revelations and assassinations follow one after the other.
As if you could ever guess, Written by Wajdi Mouawad, who fled war-torn Lebanon at the age of eight to France, Incendies is based on his play of the same name. Denis Villeneuve has breathed life into it, making you feel like you’re wandering through a maze with the characters.
