Adolf Hitler and his inner circle spent their final days and perished in the bunker underneath Berlin. Outside, it solely shows the failure of the Nazi defense of Berlin, the misery of the civilian population, and the burning of Hitler, Eva Braun, Joseph Goebbels, and Magda Goebbel’s remains. Blondi and his family are constantly moving back and forth through a maze of concrete passageways that are dimly lit. “Das Bootcramped “‘s sets made me think of them.

Footage from “Downfall,” shot just before her death, shows her admitting she should have known more about Nazi crimes. The movie observes the workings of the world within the bunker against the backdrop of his magnetic personality and the blind loyalty of his lieutenants. Hitler was the sole source of authority in the Nazi regime. Screaming ultimatums and banging maps on the floor to move forces that no longer existed, giving commands to dead leaders, and counting on fictional armies to save him. A film that writer-producer Bernd Eichinger had wanted to make for decades, but had never thought possible due to its scope, had now found its dramatic key in historian Joachim Fest’s book “Der Untergang” (“The Downfall: Inside Hitler’s Bunker, The Last Days of the Third Reich”). This book focuses on Hitler and his people’s final twelve months in power, and Eichinger saw that those final twelve days in the bunker were a reflection of Hitler and his people’s harrowing story during those twelve years in power. He argues the closing days reveal much about how the regime’s mass fanaticism operated in its early years and how it persisted to the very end.

Around the same time that Eichinger read Fest’s book, he also read Traudl Junge’s memoirs, which were later transformed into the documentary Blind Spot: Hitler’s Secretary. It all came together because of Fest and Traudl Junge.

“Downfall” is the first German film since 1956’s “Der Letzte Akt” (“The Last Act”), in which Oskar Werner played a German soldier who witnessed Hitler’s rise to power.

About the quiz

Oliver Hirschbiegel, the filmmaker, says, “Since there is no cinematic frame of reference for our film in German film history, we are creating new ground. A true and complete dedication, I realized after reading the book, meant spending two years of my life in the Third Reich, with all of those personalities and primitive ideologies… Suddenly, my hair was standing on end. Despite my wife’s warnings, I went ahead with it. Before taking on the assignment, I understood that I had already opened myself up to it.”

Ulrich Noethen plays Heinrich Himmler (the interior minister). Fuehrer’s belief that the war can still be won is fed by Josef Goebbels (Ulrich Matthes). As Hitler’s Minister of Armaments and personal architect. Albert Speer (Heino Ferch) advises him to flee Berlin and spare people from the Allied armies’ destruction.

Traudl Junge, Goebbels’ wife Magda (Corinna Harfouch), and Gutsche (Gotz Otto). Hitler’s personal adjutant, all demonstrate a remarkable loyalty to the Third Reich.

Shirer says Hitler was “the last of the great conqueror-adventurers in the tradition of Alexander, Caesar, and Napoleon.” Fuehrer Hitler is both repellant and barren due to his lack of justification for his actions, according to Alan Bullock. ‘A combination of Prometheus and Lucifer’ is how John Toland describes him. However, after it was all over, there was little left to remember.”
