Horror has no laws, yet it is safe to argue that bare minimum levels can exist. If one of the classics will be the huge strength on the poster. At least make it emerge in unusual ways. And if your cinema contains certain boozing Irish vampire bodies. At least make it a nice moment to find out about a long-buried body. The “Boys of County Hell” rejects these proven standards. And it’s the type of weekly Shudder film that doesn’t return the viewer to it, so much as it drains it.
Things don’t begin with much “Boys from County Hell” promise, and as they go along, things won’t get better. But it’s not for the sake of trying because almost two introductions show that elderly people suddenly bleeding from your eyes watching TV, and afterward a trio of Irish Ruffians who grab Canadian tourists, who are supposed to have a story that has inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula, with an ominous pile of rocks. The tourists are so immediately frustrated, but the local people are content, especially because there is nothing more to do there. Joke all you want, but the mini-tower of jagged rocks, which sits ominously on the field as Eugene’s father Françie works with his firm to crush it and turn it into a bypass, is the most fascinating thing in this movie. I’d say vampires have an Irish accent but in the County Hell boys. A movie with a lot more delicious bite than their title suggests, they don’t talk a lot.
In a little hamlet with a reputed grave of the ancient Irish vampire that inspired Dracula by Bram Stoker, the film follows a young, aimless guy (Jack Rowan) who, if an untold horror is awakened, becomes the last defense of his friends and family. Writer/director Chris Baugh is acting with a free-wheeling, whimsical brush that plays with stories and screenplays. You cannot request a greater cast for a film like this.
County Hell boys take some time (apart from the wonderful open sequence). But once they do, they make for a satisfying vampire flick that is blood-drenched. The major vampire in Boys, with its power and appearance (mostly held in the shadows). Is slightly different from most, a successful twist in the genre. Baugh’s blood flow, gore, and violence, however, the movie isn’t frightful.

First, some history: Bram Stoker, the apparent creator of our contemporary vampire notion, “Dracula,” was an Irish author. Now, some retconning things: Stoker’s monster was inspired by the evil achievements of Abhartach, the small Irish town of Six Mile Hill, who loved drunk his neighbors’ blood, in the world of Chris Baugh’s flashy horror-comedy “Boys from County Hell.” A locally opened Abhartach and he was buried in a grassy field under a large cairn of stone, never again to be seen. Maybe.
Such is Eugene (Jack Rowan), the shifting world, and William, his best friend (Fra Fee). The fable of Abhartach is a great way to distract stupid tourists, but these local youngsters cannot shake the impression that the big story may be. Baugh, a film producer from Northern Ireland best known for his Sundance “Bad Day for the Cut” movie, skilfully adapts for his second feature his 2013 original short, one that combines good humor, cruel horror, and the texture of true life.
While “Boys from County Hell” has an unquenchable love for vampire lore and claims for the Irish, Baugh is just as concerned with making a slice-of-life that can encompass both practical problems (the new by-pass of the road) (again, a vampire). The result is a humorous horror-comedy full of characters that make sensible and logical choices in horrendous situations.
