Donald Shirley and Tony “Lip” Vallelonga are the subjects of Green Book, a fictionalized account of their romance. In Florida, Shirley grew up in a well-off black family and became a classical piano prodigy. Later, he would perform often at Carnegie Hall, which was just steps away from his opulent apartment, and collaborate on numerous recordings and projects with prominent orchestras, including Chicago Symphony and the New York Philharmonic.

But due to racial power systems, notable black classical musicians were few and far between, and he was never able to make it to the top of the classical world. Study: African Americans make up just 1.8% of orchestral musicians in the United States.

He was born in 1930 in the Bronx to working-class Italian parents and spent his childhood there. It wasn’t until 1962 that Shirley recruited him to drive her through the Jim Crow South on a concert tour. He worked as a bouncer, maître d’hôtel and chauffeur. A year and a half on the road, the mismatched duo dodged danger and learned about each other’s worlds. She would go on to become a successful actress, appearing in The Sopranos.
