When a commoner appears, a woodcutter and a priest are seated beneath the city’s spectacular gate as a way of shelter from the rain. In the shadow of the gate, he joins them, and they immediately begin telling him about the harrowing experience they had just had. The priest verifies that he had seen him with his wife earlier that day. In addition to the woodcutter and priest, the police arrive with a bandit who has confessed to the crime.

Shamed, the wife asks the bandit to combat with her husband till he dies in order to free her from her disgrace. The bandit ultimately prevails and murders the samurai. When the samurai tries to use his valuable dagger on his wife, she retreats into the woods, and the bandit steals it.
