In Valmelaina, Italy, after World War II, a vast mass of men gathers around a job agency. A family guy named Antonio is trying to find a job in Italy’s stagnant economy. Antonio will need a bicycle for the work, the officer explains. In order to provide for his family, Antonio pawned the bike. He promises to retrieve it within the next three days.
Suddenly, the other men start shouting that they have bicycles and can take Antonio’s place. Afraid of losing his job, Antonio lies and says he’ll arrive at work on a bicycle.
Despite the job offer, he declines it, saying, “Damn the day I was born!” Maria is able to logically decide to sell their bed sheets for more money, despite Antonio’s frenzy and gloom. The linen is later sold for 7,500 lire, which is more than enough for Antonio to reclaim his bike from the business.
Afterward, Antonio turns up early to meet his supervisor while grasping his bicycle tenaciously. Antonio’s manager tells him that he will begin working tomorrow morning, which makes him very happy!
Bicycle Thieves quiz
Maria wants to pay a visit to a woman in Via Della Paglia before coming home. Antonio asks a boy to monitor his bike after a group of women asks him where Maria is. Maria defends her visit to a fate teller by claiming that the seer foretold Antonio’s employment status. Also, you must try to play this Bicycle Thieves quiz.
Maria feels forced to give the fortune teller money because her prediction was accurate. Why on earth would a mother with two young children and a head on her shoulders listen to such dumb stuff, Antonio asks? If you’re Maria, then you must have money to throw away. Antonio’s eruption frustrates Maria, but she is eventually persuaded to go home without paying him.
As a result, Bicycle Thieves has the power of a great tale. Also because of this, it is considered to be one of the most accessible, universal, and influential neorealist films. Bicycle Thieves, however, is much more than its parable-like plot might suggest.
Antonio Ricci (Lamberto Maggiorani) and scores of other men wait for job openings at a government employment agency. While the other men are waiting for Antonio’s name, he is absently loitering some distance away and must be called. What do you think of his apathy and lack of hope? Although Antonio cares profoundly about the situation, he is also a guy who has been battered by life.
About the quiz
He takes the work in spite of himself, sure that he will be unable to do it. To Maria, he bemoans his bad fate (Lianella Carell). Antonio recently pawned his bicycle to buy food, and now he’s unable to do his job.
In addition to being an actor in high demand, Vittorio De Sica (1902-1974) also directed light comedies. After Visconti’s “Ossessione,” he made “The Children are Watching” in 1942. The Postman Always Rings Twice, a film by Visconti based on James M. Cain’s hardboiled novel, is frequently referred to as the first neorealist film, but there were films that looked at everyday life in an unadorned fashion even during the silent era.
In his films, De Sica and others often used actual people instead of actors, which was shocking to audiences after decades of Hollywood glitz. After a love squabble left Pauline Kael in a state of despair, she went to see De Sica’s first great film, “Shoeshine,” in 1947. “I came out of the theater with tears streaming down my face and overheard a college girl complaining to her boyfriend, ‘Well, I don’t see what was so special about that movie.'” No longer sure if my tears were for the tragedy on the TV or the sadness I felt within myself, I went up and down the street, sobbing mindlessly.
When people are unable to experience the beauty of “Shoeshine,” what else can they feel?”
