A fearful, invisible force is killing a girl as she dips into the waves off Amity Island. He examined and concluded that the attack was a shark attack. Chief Martin Brody attempts to close the beach, but Larry Vaughn, Mayor of Amity, urges him to forget about it. It’s nearing the 4th of July and he’s frightened to make the attack public by damaging the tourist season. He persuades Brody to record the death as a shipwreck. Soon after, Brody is with his family at the beach, attacking a young man and dragging his son into the sea before dozens of witnesses, including the mother of his boy. For anyone who can kill the shark, it announces a $3,000 prize.
A fisherman called Quint offers $10,000 for the murder of the shark, and Brody requests the mainland oceanographic institute to send one of its scientists. Better young, cocky Marine Biologist Matth Hooper, who has been obsessed with sharks since he was twelve when he accidentally hooked a small shark while fishing. He looks at the remains of the first victim of the shark and believes there was no waterfall but an attack by an extraordinarily enormous shark.

The hippie actually appears and wreaks sufficient damage on enough persons, following a practical joke in which the end of a shark reveals a brim, to finally spake more about the mayor than Hooper was spoken about by the watery corpse. Brody now takes this chance to encourage the mayor to hire Quint, as his money is much less expensive. Quint is recruited but must comply with unwanted terms: his only staff will be Brody and Hooper.
