“Alien” is a film of objects that can save you and kill you at their most important level. It is a parent in “Jaws,” “Halloween,” and has several spiders, snakes, tarantulas, and stalkers. It was Howard Hawk’s most evident influence: “The Thing” (1951), a squad in a remote outpost that discovered an alien from far distances, brought it into the corridor, and picked one at a time. See this film and you see in embryo “Alien.”
In other ways, a brilliant original is Ridley Scott’s 1979 film. It builds on “Star Wars” (1977)’s seminal opening shot, its vast ship in the lonely interstellar space, and Lucas’ Space Opera sidesteps, telling a story in the genre of traditional “hard” science fiction; with its tough crew members and its mercenary motives, in the 1st century, this story would have found its home in Astounding Science Fiction by John W. Campbell Campbell appreciated stories that logically handled external space by engineers and researchers, not by space jockeys and ray-gun blasters.

The figure of Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver, would certainly have been attractive to fans of science fiction in the Golden Age. She has little interest in finding the extraterrestrial and much less in the orders of the boss to return him as a potential weapon. She sees what can happen and her response to the ‘Special Order 24’ is brief: ‘How can we kill it?’ “Return alien form of life and all other priorities withdrawn?” Her relentless loathing for the alien is the unifying thread that goes through all three sequences of “Alien,” which have steadily fallen in quality but maintained their motivating obsession.
