The “Once Upon A Time in the West” from Sergio Leone represents the meticulous distillation of the Clint Eastwood western, which made him famous in the original three. The same rhythm of waiting and violence is present; the same sweaty ugly faces.
Unfortunately, there is also the incapacity of Leone to call it stops. The film extends for about three hours and gives two wrong alarms before it ends. Cheyenne encounters the enigmatic man who performs the harmonica and names him Harmonica at a roadhouse outside Flagstone. In order to release the film in America, Paramount deleted the distinguishing elements – such as purposeful ride and details – about 25 minutes and so eliminated the style of Leone. The shorter version was a significant business deception. However, this revisionist west had to restore the removed portions afterward, and the picture generated a grateful follow-up. As the brutal Frank and Ennio Morricone’s poignant score, Fonda has turned into one of his best performances.
