Most of Martin Scorsese’s films were about guys who tried to achieve their inner self-image. Travis Bickle is like Jake LaMotta, Rupert Pupkin, Howard Hughes, the Dalai Lama, Bob Dylan, or Jesus Christ, in fact. “The Departed” is about two men who are radically opposite in their inner reality who are striving to live public lives. Their attempts are either implosively or fatally treason to destroy them. Their stories include a moral labyrinth that carries the masks of good and evil. Which The Departed character are you?
The tale was inspired by the most successful film in Hong Kong in recent years, “Infernal Affairs” (2002) by Alan Mak and Andrew Lau. After reading my review of this film in 2004, I found I could change the names, cut and paste it and talk about this film. However, that would entail simply the surface, the plot, and a few philosophical details. The director uses characters, locations, energy and his buried idea as a scorses film and not only a retreat. I like to say a film isn’t about what it is; it’s about how it is. The Scorsese film is always like this.
This one, rather than New York or Vegas, opens with the Coke scene in “GoodFellas” at home, which would be a cop and mobster scene set in Boston.
