A charming, amiable, good-hearted, and occasionally gross comedy, “Grown Ups” is like spending a weekend with kind folks you don’t want to see again anytime soon. They are the kind of folks who make you wonder, “What was that all about?” as you’re driving home. Try to picture the Three Stooges hitting each other in the face with dry bananas that have been reconstituted. Actually, no.
The setting for the narrative is that there were five youngsters on a middle school basketball team. Their cherished antique coach passed away. They go back to the lakeside cabin where they celebrated their triumph all those years ago to grieve for him. Unexpectedly, the five players from the team they defeated are spending the same weekend at the same lake.
Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider, Kevin James, Chris Rock, and David Spade each portray one of the five mates. Salma Hayek, Sandler’s wife, is a well-known fashion designer. Joyce Van Patten is Schneider’s significantly more senior spouse. Maya Rudolph is the expectant wife of Rock. Mother in the Madea mold is Ebony Jo-Ann. Maria Bello, James’ spouse, still exclusively breastfeeds their 4-year-old at all times. There are also roles for Steve Buscemi as a man who ends up in a body cast, Di Quon as Sandler’s Asian nanny, and of course Schneider’s three daughters from two previous marriages, two of whom are towering models and the third short and stout. Spade is unmarried, which given the size of the cast is just as well because the characters have five children (I think). Because there are so many characters in the film, certain sequences have the appearance of a line-up for a group photograph.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Grown Ups quiz.
There is no subtlety to the physical humor. Another guy had his face forced twice into dog poop, and one character ends up with her face in a cake. The nursing mother squirts milk here and there, threatening her son with a “got milk?” mustache made of actual hair if he doesn’t wean himself from breastfeeding soon. Everyone in the group visits a water park. To settle old scores, a basketball game is being played. so forth.

The strange thing is how carefree everything is. The five old friends occasionally sound like they are aimlessly reminiscing about the past. Many things seem to be created purely for enjoyment. For instance, Sandler may remark, “Naw, let the kids all share it” when it appears that he and his wife will be assigned the bedroom with the water mattress. Do those words ring of a joke setup? One does not exist.

Rob Schneider, 46, and Joyce Van Patten, 75, play a married couple, which causes some lighthearted laughter but no foul language. They clearly enjoy each other. Additionally, she delivers a warm and genuine speech that is well-delivered but rarely appears to fit in this movie during the required sequence where every character confesses or shares one of life’s lessons.
About the quiz
Given the cast’s cast traffic bottleneck, the comedy talent is seen but not really heard. Kevin James and Chris Rock don’t have enough screen time. Mario Bello is only seen in milk-pumping and breastfeeding scenes. With her farts, bunions, and pratfalls, Ebony Jo-Ann’s persona dangerously approaches being mockingly caricatured. Maya Rudolph spends a lot of time reacting to other people and touching her unborn child. In his role as a good guy, Adam Sandler never does much more than that.

The awkward cast size is never overcome by Dennis Dugan’s direction. Because it’s so difficult to keep all the characters alive, he occasionally uses a round-robin technique for reaction shots, which is timing-defeating. One-shot exchanges make up a portion of the dialogue, and some characters spend considerable time only reacting. As I stated, everything seems lovely and in good spirits, but it seems like all these kind people are just trying to keep the conversation going. It’s a comedy, but it’s neither “The Hangover” or “Death at a Funeral” from 2007.
