Burlesque Quiz

“Burlesque” burlesque performances do not include nudity, striptease, baggy pants comedians, or performers with names like Porsche Galore. Aside from that, the shows are similar to those at the Rialto and Follies burlesque houses on South State Street when I first visited Chicago as a sin-seeking adolescent.

“Burlesque” presents burlesque as if it had passed away and gone to paradise. A club that would make a Vegas casino happy is hidden behind a shabby side entrance on Sunset Strip. It has fantasy’s eerie growing and contracting dimensions. The stage is initially appropriate for an intimate cabaret; later, there is enough room to present a production number with dozens of (unaccounted for) dancers descending a Busby Berkeley-style staircase. The audience is made up entirely of shadowy extras, whom their companions will have to search for.

Editor’s Picks

The “Burlesque Lounge” catches the eye of Ali (Christina Aguilera), a small-town teenager fresh off the bus from Iowa. She steps in just in time to see Tess (Cher) perform the song “Welcome to Burlesque.” Cher looks precisely like she always does in this scene and throughout the film. Other folks grow old. Cher has become a brand.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Burlesque quiz.

The film features a small ensemble of broadly drawn characters who serve to separate song-and-dance numbers. Tess and her ex-husband Vince co-own the establishment. (Peter Gallagher). They inspire What’s Wrong With This Picture? games as a pair. His role is to excitedly hope that they can sell out to Marcus (Eric Dane), the real estate developer who wants to demolish the club and replace it with condos. Jack (Cam Gigandet), the club bartender, uses eyeliner but is revealed to be straight. He lets Ali crash on his couch, but there’s no sex because he has a fiancee in New York and the picture is rated PG-13. Sean is the stage planner. (Stanley Tucci). Except for one memorable night in Reno with Tess, he’s gay. Alternatively, Lake Tahoe. She is forgetful.

Nikki (Kristen Bell), the star dancer, becomes enraged with Ali after the farm girl tells her she appears like a drag queen. In Iowa, they must not see many drag performers. There’s also Georgia (Julianne Hough), a nice lady… Doesn’t a story like this leave only one option for her?

Sorry, I got sidetracked again, ruminating about Marcus’s proposed condo tower. What size impact will it require? We see the exterior of the lounge several times, which consists of an arch of light bulbs next to what appears to be the side of a modest frame building with outside stairs to a second story that doesn’t appear to exist inside.

About the quiz

On that first night, Ali notices a black girl standing on the landing of those stairs, who smiles nicely at her. We see the same girl several times throughout the film, but she never receives a name or any dialogue. As a member of the Club Family, she plays the part of the Black Girl Who Is Seen But Not Heard. She should not be upset. No other performer is allowed to be anything.

Cher and Christina Aguilera are both featured in big song numbers in the film, which I liked on a music video level. In her early scenes, Aguilera has an unforced charm, but as she transforms into a glamorous celebrity, she becomes less interesting. We discover she is an orphan. That shortens the backstory.

You know how in Bollywood musicals, the famous actress will be alone on a mountaintop, and when she begins to sing and dance, a dozen male singer-dancers appear out of nowhere? This occurs in the grand conclusion. A stairway to the stars appears, and a dozen male dancers descend as the females make a perfect chorus line. What happened to them? What will they do? Remember that because this club is so tiny, all of the costumes are stored on a single clothing rack backstage.

Is this film for you? It very well could be. You’ve read my evaluation and believe I’m just making snide remarks and engaging in cheap sarcasm. Okay, I’ll take it. “Burlesque” showcases Cher and Christina Aguilera at their best, which is more than enough.
