In “1917,” Sam Mendes’ latest feature-length single-shot picture, technological accomplishments are undeniable.
Films that are concerned with their particular technique offer little room for things like story, characters, or a cause for being other than as a feat of technical derring-do. It’s like sitting through two hours of someone else playing a video game, and it’s not a particularly engaging one at that.
